Plaster Ceiling Roses

British Plaster Ceiling RosesPlaster Ceiling Roses were originally moulded in sections. The invention of gelatine moulds in the 1850’s reduced the cost of making plaster ceiling roses and allowed them to be produced in one piece off site.

Plaster ceiling roses were known in Victorian times as ‘centre flowers’. Ceiling roses were standard in all Victorian properties from the humblest terrace to the grandest detached villa, and increased in size and complexity accordingly. Most were made of plaster of paris because of its ease of use and versitility, but in some homes, Plaster ceiling roses were hand made from wood or even cast in iron.

Plaster ceiling roses can be broken down into four constituent elements. The Ceiling rose outer ‘border’ - often a rope design - an inner ‘body’ element often a floral motif, and then finally the ‘centre’, in the middle of which is the fourth element, the seed or drop of the plaster ceiling rose.

The drop is now largely missing from modern plaster ceiling roses to allow for an electric cable but is still retained in some of our purely decorative designs.

ALL of our Plaster Ceiling Roses are made by hand at our factory in North Yorkshire.
